The best board games for beginners are modern “gateway” games: you can learn them in five or ten minutes, most games last an hour or less, and every turn feels simple while still giving you real choices. Codenames, Kingdomino, Ticket to Ride, Azul and Cascadia are all easy places to start, and none of them needs any experience.
The easiest way to try several before you buy is a board game café or a pub games night, where someone teaches you at the table. Both are relaxed, sociable and set up for newcomers.
Find cafés, clubs and game nights near you on our board games page.
Easy games to start with
These games all have short rules, quick turns and plenty of table chat. The details below come from each publisher.
| Game | Players | Why it suits beginners |
|---|---|---|
| Codenames | 4 to 8+ | Two teams guess words from one-word clues. A game takes about 15 minutes and works for big groups. |
| Cascadia | 1 to 4 | Pick a habitat tile and an animal, place them, repeat. Calm and puzzly, with no fighting. |
| Catan | 3 to 4 | Collect resources, trade with friends and build roads and towns, in 60 to 90 minutes. |
| Bomb Busters | 2 to 5 | Work together to defuse a bomb. A co-operative game, so everyone wins or loses as a team. |
| Dito! (JinxO) | 3 to 7 | A word association game where you try to think alike. |
Kingdomino (match domino tiles to build a little kingdom, which its publisher calls perfect for newcomers), Ticket to Ride (collect coloured train cards and claim routes across a map) and Azul (draft colourful tiles to decorate a wall) are three more favourites that cafés teach every day.
Let the awards guide you
Each summer, the German Spiel des Jahres jury picks a game of the year aimed at families and newcomers. Bomb Busters won in 2025 and Dito! (JinxO in English) won in 2026, while Cascadia won back in 2022. When you are ready for something meatier, the sister award, the Kennerspiel des Jahres, went to Endeavor: Deep Sea in 2025 and Rebirth in 2026.
What to buy first
Start with one quick game for groups and one slightly longer game for an evening. UK recommended retail prices from the distributor Asmodee UK in October 2026:
| Game | UK price |
|---|---|
| Dobble | £13.99 RRP |
| Codenames (2025 edition) | £19.99 RRP |
| Azul | £42.99 RRP |
| Ticket to Ride (2025 refresh) | £44.99 RRP |
| Catan (6th edition, 2025) | £49.99 RRP |
Shop prices are often a little lower than RRP. Most shops on our listings stock these, so ask locally first, and staff are happy to suggest a game for the number of people you usually play with. Playing a game at a café before buying it is a great way to find your favourites.
How board game cafés work
A board game café is a café or bar with a library of hundreds of games. You pay a gaming fee per person, which covers as many games as you like during your visit, and buy food and drink on top. Staff, often called games gurus, suggest games for your group and teach you how to play.
Some real UK examples from October 2026:
- Draughts, London: £7.95 per adult off-peak (weekdays until 4pm) and £9.95 at peak times, for up to three hours. Under-12s play free, and staff suggest and teach games.
- Thirsty Meeples, Oxford: tables for up to 10 people for three hours, at £10 per person for games only or £8 per person with a food or drink order.
- Chance & Counters, Leeds: from £2.50 per person per hour off-peak and £3.50 at peak times, with children 14 and under free off-peak.
Booking ahead is a good idea, especially on Friday and Saturday evenings. Find cafés in London and Birmingham, or see venue pages such as Draughts Waterloo, Thirsty Meeples Oxford and Chance & Counters Leeds.
Pub meetups, clubs and shop nights
If you would rather not book a table, a regular games night is a lovely way to meet people. Groups meet in pubs, cafés, libraries and game shops, bring a pile of games and welcome newcomers, including people coming on their own.
Across the board game nights we list, most start between 6pm and 7pm, Monday to Thursday are the most popular nights, and many are free. Where there is a charge, it is usually £1 to £5. Each listing shows the details, and our city calendars, such as the London events calendar, show what is on each week. Manchester has one of the busiest scenes we list.
UK Games Expo
The UK’s largest hobby games convention, UK Games Expo, returns to the NEC in Birmingham from Friday 4 to Sunday 6 June 2027. It has a board game library, open gaming areas and advice for first-time visitors, which makes it a fun day out once you have caught the bug.
Good habits at the table
- Learn the goal first. Ask how you win before the details, and the rest of the rules make more sense.
- Play a practice round. Most groups are happy to play the first turn or two open-handed while everyone learns.
- Let people make their own choices. In co-operative games, share ideas and let each player decide their own turn.
- Look after the games. Keep drinks clear of the table edge, handle cards with dry hands and count the pieces back into the box.
- Win and lose kindly. A quick “good game” at the end goes a long way.

Common questions
What is a good board game for beginners?
Look for games that teach in a few minutes and finish in about an hour or less, such as Codenames, Kingdomino, Ticket to Ride, Azul or Cascadia. Recent Spiel des Jahres winners, like Bomb Busters (2025) and Dito! (2026, sold in English as JinxO), are chosen with newcomers and families in mind.
How do board game cafés work?
You book a table, pay a gaming fee per person, and then play anything from the café's library while ordering food and drink. Staff, often called games gurus, recommend games for your group and teach you the rules at the table.
How much does a board game café cost in the UK?
Prices vary by café and time of day. In October 2026, Draughts in London charged £7.95 to £9.95 per adult for up to three hours, Thirsty Meeples in Oxford charged £8 per person with a food or drink order, and Chance & Counters charged from £2.50 per person per hour.
Can I go to a board game night on my own?
Yes. Pub meetups and club nights are made for this: organisers group people at tables and someone who knows the game teaches it. Tell the host it is your first time and they will find you a friendly table.
Where can I play board games for free?
Many pub meetups and community groups are free to join, with venues simply asking you to buy a drink. Our listings show free and low-cost board game nights in every city we cover.
